"Shot between 1998 and 2002, Renee Green’s Wavelinks took shape near the end of a decade of ambitious experimentation and utopian hopes placed in the new genre of electronic music. During this time, the emergent genre – with a twin lineage in the academic experimental music of 1950s and ‘60s and techno dance music of the 1980s – gave birth to an international subculture complete with a network of independent labels and festivals. Yet though electronic music serves as a topos for Wavelinks, its focus is not confined to that (possibly ebbing) phenomenon, but rather with the broader issues of sound and music’s capacity to link people and time periods – with sound’s social, relational, even subversive functions."
