Kobena Mercer is Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Visual Culture and Media at Middlesex University in London. He has taught at New York University and University of California at Santa Cruz and was Director of Center for the Study of Cultural Diversity at California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles. Highly regarded as a cultural theorist, Mercer was Senior Fellow at Vera List Center for Art and Politics, New School University, New York and a Fellow at Society for the Humanities, Cornell University. He is currently Writer in Residence at Institute of International Visual Arts, London. His many publications include: James VanDerZee (2003); Isaac Julien (2001); Keith Piper: Relocating the Remains (1997); Welcome to the Jungle: New Positions in Black Cultural Studies (1994); ICA Documents: Black Film/British Cinema (1988). His essays have been featured in several anthologies, including Art and It's Histories: A Reader (1998), Visual Culture: The Reader (1999), The Third Text Reader on Art, Culture and Theory (2002), The Visual Culture Reader (2003, 2nd ed.), and Theorising Diaspora (2003). In addition to monographic texts on historical and contemporary artists, including James VanDer Zee, Adrian Piper, Isaac Julien, Keith Piper, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, and Moshekwa Langa, Mercer is the editor of the four volume series Annotating Art's Histories published by Iniva and MIT Press. The series includes: Cosmopolitan Modernisms (2005); Discrepant Abstraction (2006); Pop Art and Vernacular Cultures (2007); and Exiles, Diasporas and Strangers (2008), all published by INIVA/Institute of International Visual Arts, and MIT.
