A former curator of Thread Waxing Space in New York, Lia Gangitano founded in 2001 Participant Inc., a nonprofit art space, also in New York, that has presented exhibitions by, among others, Virgil Marti, Charles Atlas, Kathe Burkhart, and Lutz Bacher. Her exhibitions, screenings, and performances include Spectacular Optical; Luther Price: Imitation of Life; The Life Casts of Cynthia Plaster Caster: 1968–2000; Børre Sæthre: Module for Mood; and Sigalit Landau. She is editor (with Esme Watanabe) of the forthcoming anthology The Alternative to What? Thread Waxing Space and the 90s and (with Steven Nelson) of New Histories and Boston School. As an associate curator, Gangitano co-curated Dress Codes and Boston School for the ICA in Boston. She has contributed to such publications as TRANS>arts.cultures.media; The Sharpest Point: Animation at the End of Cinema; Lovett/Codagnone; and the catalogue Whitney Biennial 2006: Day for Night. She is currently a curatorial advisor for the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and an adjunct professor at New York University.
