Camille Norment’s multimedia work is concerned with the ways in which the body is inscribed with meaning through its negotiation with its surroundings. In some cases, the artwork is itself treated as a body that negotiates its own environment. While highly concerned with aesthetic experience, the work simultaneously spans the thresholds of the social, the political, and the formal. Emphasizing the intertwining of the visual and the sonic, Norment evokes contradictory-seeming and uncanny sensory experiences: looking in the mirror and not seeing one’s reflection or treating the entire body as if it were a sensory organ. She has exhibited at, among other venues, Kulturhuset in Stockholm; the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center; Kunsthalle Bern (Switzerland); the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo; the Charlottenborg Fonden in Copenhagen; the Santa Monica Museum of Art in Los Angeles; the Studio Museum in Harlem (New York); and the 2003 Venice Biennale. She is professor of art and technology at Malmö University’s School of Arts and Communications in Sweden.
