Florian Hecker’s works emphasize the connection between the most recent and the now-historic developments in computer music. Often working closely with software engineers and scientists, he incorporates into his live presentations and studio works psychoacoustic effects that disorient the listener’s spatial perception. He has exhibited at Secession in Vienna; TN Probe Gallery in Tokyo; the Schindler House at the MAK Center in Los Angeles; the MUMOK in Vienna; and Badischer Kunstverein in Karlsruhe. Most recently, Hecker presented a large-scale, computerized sound piece at the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris and at the Lenbachhaus in Munich. His full-length solo recording Sun Pandämonium received the 2003 Award of Distinction from the Prix Ars Electronica. Blackest Ever Black, a collaboration with Russell Haswell, was released in 2007 on CD and vinyl by Warner Classics.

In 1971 he was a founding member of the influential Sheffield-based experimental music group, Cabaret Voltaire. He has released three solo albums of field recordings: Outside the Circle of Fire, Stepping into the Dark (which received a 2000 Award of Distinction from the Prix Ars Electronica), and Weather Report. “In recognition of his outstanding contribution to sound recording technology, especially in the field of natural history and documentary location sound,” he was awarded in 2006 an honorary doctorate in technology by the University of the West of England.
